::Thursday's With A Hawaiian::

WEEK ONE (7/7/11)
1. From where you live, are the public schools (elementary - high school) close to you or do you have to travel a long way to get to them?
In Hawaii there are a lot of schools so it's not like we have to drive a long way to get to school. A few times when i've been asked this question I would make something up like, "I have to take a canoe to school or swim". It's funny how some people don't know much about Hawaii and they take my word for it haha :) Although there is one island called Ni'ihau where students have to take a ferry to Kauai, the island next to it.

2. Are there any sports that are common on the mainland that are uncommon for you to see played in Hawaii?

For the most part you see a lot of the same sports here on the mainland as you do in Hawaii. The only sports i would say i haven't seen played are hockey and lacrosse.

3. Are there any sports that are common in Hawaii that are uncommon for you to see on the mainland?
Obviously water sports like surfing and paddling are very popular in Hawaii. Mens volleyball is popular too which i know isn't a big deal in the midwest.

**On a side note...I wasn't sure how Hawaiians refer to the rest of the states. I guessed that they might call  them the "upper states". So Maile helped me out and informed me that they refer to the rest of the states as the mainland. I'm sorry...I do not live in Hawaii and have never been there so I had no clue what they would call it haha. This is the exact reason that I chose to do segments on Hawaii and Alaska so that everyone can learn about these little facts if they didn't know about them already :)

Starting on Thursday July 7, I will be starting my new segment Thursday's With A Hawaiian! Very similar to my page, Tuesday's With An Alaskan, each Thursday I will be asking several questions to my friend, Maile, about her home state of Hawaii and she will give us some very interesting answers. Visit this page to see each week's Q&A post! I think it will be very fun listening to the different facts about these two states :)
